Do not coil excess cable of different types (i.e. motor power and feedback) together. An efficient transformer is formed at HF. Cable lengths should ideally be trimmed to fit the application. If excess cable cannot be trimmed, it should be laid in an ‘S’ or figure eight pattern.
It is important to keep this struggle between performance and cost in mind when you talk to customers about energy-efficient motor-driven equipment. Yes, efficiency is probably more important to homeowners now than ever, but that efficient operation comes at a price. And motor manufacturers will keep working to strike that balance between motor performance, efficiency, and cost.
For wiring a single-phase motor, the most important objective is to distinguish the starting circuit from the main winding. These two circuits are isolated from one another electrically if the lead wires are separarted and not in contact with each other. Initially, the ohmeter can be used to determine which wire belongs to which circuit as well as checking continuity between leads.
In simple DC and universal motors, the rotor spins inside the stator. The rotor is a coil connected to the electric power supply and the stator is a permanent magnet or electromagnet. Large AC motors (used in things like factory machines) work in a slightly different way: they pass alternating current through opposing pairs of magnets to create a rotating magnetic field, which "induces" (creates) a magnetic field in the motor rotor, causing it to spin around. If you take one of these induction motors and "unwrap" it, so the stator is effectively laid out into a long continuous track, the rotor can roll along it in a straight line. This ingenious design is known as a linear motor, and you will find it in such things as factory machines and floating "maglev" (magnetic levitation) railroads.
